Informed Consent, Explained
Informed consent is the process of learning the key facts about a study before deciding whether to take part. It's much more than signing a form — it's an ongoing conversation between you and the research team that continues for as long as you're in the study.
When you express interest in a clinical research study, the study team explains what participation involves, reviews informed consent with you, and completes screening. Research is conducted by qualified research professionals at accredited facilities. Expressing interest does not guarantee enrollment, and you should understand the study before deciding whether to take part.
What the consent form covers
Before any study activities begin, you'll receive a written consent document. It explains the purpose of the study, what will happen at each visit, how long participation lasts, possible risks and discomforts, possible benefits, how your information will be kept confidential, and compensation for your time and travel.
The form also explains that participation is voluntary and that you may withdraw at any time without penalty. It lists who to contact with questions about the study or about your rights as a participant.
Take your time
You should never feel rushed. You're welcome to take the form home, read it carefully, and talk it over with family, friends, or your own healthcare provider. Ask the study team to walk through the document with you and answer your questions in plain language.
Questions worth asking
- What is the purpose of this study?
- How many visits are involved, and how long does each take?
- What will I be asked to do?
- What are the possible risks or discomforts?
- How will my personal information be protected?
- Who do I contact if I have questions later?
If anything about a study changes in a way that might affect your decision to continue, the research team will share that information with you. Consent is something you give — and can take back — at any point.
